Why is there a string of superheros movies in the past 10 years?

I know the Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and I think Spiderman are all part of the Avengers. Next year I believe an Avengers movie will come out, and each of the different Avengers own stories ties into the Avengers movie, where all the Avengers will come together.
