An infant pretending to sleep.?

Ok, correct me if im wrong here, but my friend recently had a baby. He is a week old. She claims that he fake sleeps in her arms and whenever she says something he kicks her and laughs. Are newborns capable of something like this? Or is she just a proud mommy doting on everything her new baby does? I understand new parents are often delusional due to lack of sleep mixed in with beaming pride. Haha.
